The Mercantour National Park
The Mercantour is one of France’s nine national parks. It is one of the three parks located in the Alps. It extends south of the Alpine arc between Barcelonnette and Nice. Its geographical location between sea and mountains makes it a unique ecological crossroads in Europe. The park is thus home to thousands of species.
The Mercantour experiences a unique climate as it is influenced by warm air from Italy, cold air from the northern Alps, and warm, dry air from French Provence. These climatic conditions, combined with a wide variety of soils, foster exceptional plant diversity. The park is home to 40 endemic species.
The Mercantour is also home to numerous animal species such as chamois, ibex, mouflons, and even wolves, which reappeared about twenty years ago. Raptors such as the golden eagle or the bearded vulture can also be seen in the park.
The Mercantour National Park welcomes approximately 30,000 visitors during the summer. It is not a nature reserve, so it is open to the public, but a few rules must still be observed. Dogs, hunting, and foraging are forbidden in the park.
Hiking in the Mercantour
The park offers a wide choice of hiking trails for all levels. It is the best way to discover its preserved natural environment.
