Overview of the Fernand Léger Museum

The Fernand Léger Museum was built by the painter’s wife, Nadia Léger, and his assistant Georges Bauquier in 1960. It is located on the Mas Saint-André in Biot, the painter’s residence and workplace. He had acquired this mas in 1955, shortly before his death.

The museum was designed by architect Andreï Svetchine. It is situated in the middle of a cool and shaded park designed by Henri Fisch. It features a very pleasant refreshment area for admiring the mosaics displayed on the museum’s exterior walls.

The Fernand Léger Museum exhibits about a hundred works by the artist, including paintings, sculptures, and ceramics.

Fernand Léger and World War I

Fernand Léger was 33 years old in 1914. He was called to fight the Germans during World War I. He was part of an engineering regiment, the branch of the army where he had completed his military service.

He therefore spent the war providing logistical support to the infantrymen by building roads and trenches. Even though he escaped the horror of front-line combat, this experience deeply affected him.

Fernand Léger was thus inspired by World War I, and numerous works and drawings illustrating the war can be found. The most famous being “The Card Players,” painted in 1917.
